    From the ‘meaning’ point of view, they are the same. 小菜一碟 is related to the food, so as ‘a piece of cake’, so perhaps from this prospective, it’s a bit closer to the English expression, 小事一件 could be also ‘not a big deal!’, as 事 means ‘matter’ and it’s closer to the meaning of ‘deal’.

    However, they both express the same idea, so word for word meaning is not that important, especially in the idiomatic expressions.
