Hello, I just wanted to let you know that your lessons are awesome.
I speak italian, spanish, french, english and arabic. I really want to speak Chinese becuase my boyfriend is chinese and his parents only speak chinese. I never have the time to acutally sit in a class and take chinese classes, but I’m very happy to see that you are doing this because that means I can listen to your lectures on my way to work, in the car and so on.
Thank you so much, I think I have learned a lot so far and I look foward to listening to more lectures.
By the way, the handouts help a lot while listening to your podcast for the first time.

    Thanks once again,
    Nash

    Hi serge,
thanks for your great podcasts! i just discovered them and they’re very helpful. i’m also a canadian living in shanghai and it’ll be pretty handy to have the lessons in my iPod. I just got my ipod during chinese new year and i’m quite new to all of this. I managed to get your lesson 4 podcast. how do i download the other 3?

    Nice to meet you!
Depends on what program you are using to listen to the podcasts. In iTunes you can simply subscribe to the podcast and it will download the lessons you choose automatically. Otherwise, just “save as” by clicking the right button of your mouse on the links from the lesson you want to listen to, to save it on your hard drive.

Hi thanks for the lessons, I listen while I go running in New Zealand. I have relatives in China I cannot speak to, so hopefully this is a good first step in helping my understanding.

    Many Thanks

Excellent work! This is what I have been looking for for the longest time. I can speak, read and write Nihongo, and so can get by “sight-reading” Chinese signboards, magazine captions and even short sentences, but I have always wanted to learn how to actually SPEAK the language. Now I can learn Chinese in my own unique way–by (1) studying traditional Taiwanese characters (2)using modern Hanyu Pinyin (language schools in the Philippines use Wade-Giles which I think is cumbersome), (3)aided by standard Mandarin spoken by a (practically)native speaker, (4)while referring to my old Chinese-Japanese dictionaries. And yes, thanks to you, I can do this for free. It also actually helps that your lesson manual is entirely in Hanyu Pinyin, students like me are forced to look up the characters themselves. (I do cheat by using MS-IME on the computer!) By the way, my three year-old son is learning alongside me, and I believe he pronounces ma1-ma2-ma3-ma4 better than I do. We’re both looking forward to Lesson 5. Thanks, more power to you.

Hey Serge, I am a freshmen student at the University of South Florida majoring in Political Science and International Studies(specificlly in asia). Do you recommend any particular text to help me learn Chinese(specificly writing)? I checked out 2 books from my library and have bought one, however more can’t hurt. I plan to take Chinese 1-4 next semester, but I am trying to learn as much as possible before I actually take the course, thanks. P.S. when will you be podcasting your next lesson???

  • Serge says:

    Hi Cordell,
There are some books published in Shanghai which I think are pretty useful to learn characters. If you have interest, please email me.
The 5th lesson is coming very soon……
    Today actually.

    Hello Serge
I just discovered your podcasts today on iTunes. I’m so glad I did. I had a semester of Chinese over ten years ago and have always wanted more than that. Your lessons will help me review what I’ve learned and hopefully take me even further. I also studied characters during that semester – which Ive totally forgotten all except one. the one for China or Jungwo..

    Thanks for these awesome podcasts!

I want to thank you Serge! You sound amazingly great by the way. I’m trying to find a job in Hong Kong this summer but their requirement is some basic Manndarin and your lessons are marvelous! I really want to thank you again
